WESTERVILLE, Ohio— This week at The Point, middle school students spent a part of their summer at Otterbein’s Engineering Solutions Summer Camp.

Utilizing the resources at The Point, campers learned about 3D modeling, 3D printing, prototyping, designing, building, and testing, along with variety of other skills.

Working with teams, students were able to apply these skills to solve a variety of fun and challenging problems ranging from creating catapults to cooking nachos in homemade solar ovens.

Hear about some of the camper’s favorite parts from their week at The Point:

5th grade student Aishu Pandian loved building and testing the catapults. Aishu learned a lot about 3D printing which made her more interested in designing things.

Sibling Amudha Pandian, a 6th grader, also enjoyed the 3D printing but liked designing paper airplanes the best!

Conor MacLellan, in 5th grade, loved making solar ovens for the nachos and thinks that he would consider doing a job with engineering or design when he’s older.

7th grader Claire Hale, was best at creating the catapults and said that she will never forget what she learned about circuits: “Power is red and ground is black.”

5th grader Anthony Malek enjoyed making the dowel-rod house with his team and enjoyed making a poster to display his work to others.

Equally enthused parents were excited to send their children to a camp that matched their children’s STEAM-related interests.

Parents of student Claire Hale hope that the camp will encourage Claire to explore careers in engineering, like the ones presented at camp. Other parents said that they look forward to sending their children to more camps at The Point in the future.

Otterbein’s Engineering Solutions Summer Camp is one of several camps being hosted at The Point this summer.
